A GUIDE TO THIRD PARTY FREIGHT

For our local and regional customers, Sunnyland offers in-house delivery service. Furniture is unboxed, assembled, inspected, and delivered by our staff to ensure the process is seamless for you. We always prefer to delivery via our own trucks as we can ensure you will have a good experience and can easily resolve issues if something doesn’t meet your expectations. Sunnyland delivers throughout Texas and surrounding states – ask your outdoor living expert for details and pricing.

For those outside our delivery areas, we offer different third-party freight options thru our freight broker. We do not mark up these fees or charges – we simply pass them thru to our customers to cover our actual expenses.

The different options include (not all options are always available based on the delivery address):

  • Curbside (liftgate) – a one person delivery where the carrier will simply lower shipment to the ground outside the truck
  • Threshold – the carrier will deliver to the first dry area (i.e. a garage or covered porch)
  • Room of Choice – a 1-2 person delivery (depending on weight) to a designated room (or patio) of your choice (up to 2 staircases)
  • White Glove – same as room of choice + package removal
  • White Glove (light assembly) same as White Glove + basic tool assembly up to 30 minutes (not for ready to assemble products)

If you opt to go with a third-party freight carrier, Sunnyland’s responsibility and accountability for the delivery of your furniture ends at the point the furniture leaves our warehouse. At that point, all responsibility and accountability is between you (the customer) and the freight carrier / broker.

Freight is very different than a ground carrier such as FedEx or UPS, or a delivery service as common freight carriers are primarily used for commercial deliveries. Below is a detailed explanation of how freight works, what could go wrong, and the responsibilities you have accepted in the process.

Sunnyland ships via Common Freight Carriers and although a quoted transit time may be given, we do not warrant actual ship times as they vary by carrier and region. Delivery dates are estimates and are subject to change. Freight companies provide estimates but many things out of our control can delay your shipment once it has left our dock. If you need items guaranteed to arrive on or by a specific date, we do NOT recommend shipping them via common freight.

At the time of shipment we will provide you with the specific Shipping/Tracking information for your order. As your order nears its final destination you should receive a phone call from the carrier to schedule your delivery date and time (occasionally they skip this step even when we specifically request it).  Please note freight only ships and moves on business days.

Freight shipments are sent thru multiple trucks, docks, and warehouses on the journey to its destination. Sometimes, the carrier that we contract with might use other carriers to move the product. Some freight lines are currently understaffed with shipments of full trailers sitting in the freight yards for days or weeks waiting to be processed. While these partners intend to hire only the best, in reality there could be people handling your furniture who don’t care whether your furniture arrives in good condition or damaged. Since multiple people are touching your furniture, there is a chance that items can be crushed, dropped, or handled improperly while in transit.

Concealed damages are the most troublesome type of cargo claims. Often, your boxes will look okay when they are dropped off, however, there could be damaged that is unseen until you open the box several hours or days later.  When this happens, neither you nor the carrier can prove who was actually at fault or responsible for the damaged product.  Therefore it is very important that you open each box and check for damages to your merchandise while the carrier is still at your destination

For freight shipments, all items and cartons must be inspected immediately for freight damage while the driver is still there and any damage is to be notated on the freight bill. Once notated, a freight claim can be filed with the carrier.  However, the damage must be noted while the freight carrier is still at your residence or business to ensure there is no concealed damages to your merchandise.  Otherwise, freight claims will likely be denied by the carrier. If damage has occurred to the product or your property, do not refuse the shipment as doing so will create additional freight expenses for you. Just make sure that you document the specific damage to an item, carton, or property. When you sign the driver’s delivery receipt without any additional notes or documentation, you are acknowledging receipt of all products in good order and that the delivery is complete with no lingering issues.

If damage to the merchandise, carton, crate, or packaging is noted at the time of delivery, Sunnyland will provide secondary support to assist you with filing your own freight claim.  However, if damage is not noted until later on, Sunnyland can NOT be held liable for any damage or replacement of your merchandise.  You will have to file a claim with the carrier / broker directly and often they pay pennies on the dollar for concealed damage claims based on the weight of the furniture – not the value.

If you have any concerns about this process, Sunnyland highly recommends that you choose a white glove delivery option instead of a common freight carrier. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at 972-239-3716.
