David Schweig, owner of Sunnyland Furniture, Dallas, recently completed a 12,000-sq.-ft expansion to his showroom, bringing the store's total size to 35,000 square feet of outdoor living displays, plus a 30,000-sq.-ft. on-site warehouse. Schweig and his family spent two years developing and implementing the addition.
To enhance the customer's visual shopping experience, Sunnyland partnered with a local landscape company to create manufacturer-specific lifestyle vignettes that showcase products as they would appear in consumers' backyards. "We sell comfort and relaxation in all shapes and forms," Schweig said. "We sell a lifestyle, not just furniture."
Customers can purchase the complete package -- from wall settings, carpets, lighting and accessories -- to create a finished look for their outdoor rooms. One area of the store is designed for evening entertaining, while other settings include a Tuscan villa, a lakeshore lodge, a front porch, and a home situated on a golf course, complete with a putting green.
Sunnyland was awarded a 2004 Casual Living Merchandising Award in the single store category for its outdoor room display.
