Philanthropy & Community Service
For Sunnyland Patio Furniture, the most important part of being a small, family-owned business is the Sunnyland family and the surrounding community that supports it. When Sunnyland strives for success, it’s not about the dollar amount brought in, but about the quality of life of the employees and of the success of the community.
Sunnyland has diligently worked the last 47 years to have a positive impact in the Dallas community. Each year presents new opportunities for sponsorships, fundraisers and donations.
The Sunnyland Helping Hands Committee supports events throughout the year including sponsoring the Dallas Kosher BBQ Championship, the Legacy Humane Society’s annual events, the Dallas Furniture Bank, the Carry The Load organization, the Highway for Health, Carter Blood Drives, food and toy drives and the on-site charity donation box.
In 2016, Sunnyland reached beyond its usual charities and hosted a Holiday Bazaar benefitting Our Friends Place and Zoie’s Place. Both of these extraordinary organizations help young women transition from foster care facilities to become self-reliant.
With over 30 vendors, numerous attendees, and the two charities present, the event was monetarily beneficial for both charities and allowed them a new platform to facilitate their message and gain new support.
On Small Business Saturday, Sunnyland took a different approach to celebrating its small business longevity and offered customers a discount and donated 10 percent of their purchase amount to the charity of their choice. Sunnyland continues to encourage charitable deeds from its staff, its customers and the community.
Each year, Sunnyland hosts the Dallas Kosher BBQ Championship. As the title sponsor, Sunnyland transforms its parking lot into a 2-day event venue. With more than 20 vendors, celebrity judges, live music and entertainment the BBQ draws in over 1,800 attendees from around the metroplex. The event benefits the Congregation Beth Torah and the Community Home for Adults and is part of Sunnyland’s effort to support diverse groups in the community.
Sunnyland’s Helping Hands Committee hosted several fundraisers with D’fine Your Health Nutrition & Sculpting to benefit Highway to Health’s fight against childhood obesity. A silent auction and networking event was held to raise funds for their bike ride across the USA and to educate attendees about the health initiatives for children dealing with or susceptible to childhood obesity.
Many of the promotions at Sunnyland are tied to community endeavors. The Dog Days of Summer promotion begins with a pet adoption event in partnership with the Legacy Humane Society. The Legacy Humane Society rescues dogs who are unwanted, abandoned or lost. In June, the Humane Society brought 12 dogs, available for adoption, to Sunnyland. Almost all of the dogs found their new families and fur-ever homes at the event. Sunnyland also supports the Legacy Humane Society’s annual events.
In August, Sunnyland donated $4,000 to Carry The Load. The Carry The Load organization works to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day by connecting Americans to the sacrifices of the military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel. Sunnyland raised funds with the help of donations from customers during the store’s Memorial Day Sale in May. Customers donated to Carry The Load in lieu of paying for delivery, saving them money and donating to a good cause at the same time. Sunnyland plans on working with Carry The Load again on a larger scale in 2017.
To help customers clear the way for new furniture, Sunnyland partners with the Dallas Furniture Bank to donate customer’s gently used furniture items to families in need. The Dallas Furniture Bank has provided furniture for over 3,269 families since 2003. In exchange for the customer’s donated furniture, Sunnyland gives customers a SunnyMoney gift card to go towards their new patio furniture purchase.
In September, Sunnyland partnered with ShopLocalDFW.com and the Home Furnishings Association to present a free lunch and learn, "Where You're Losing Customers in Your Store and How to Get Them Back". The session was an effort to help small businesses reach their full potential and to maintain customer loyalty. Sunnyland’s longevity can be attributed to many lessons learned over the years. Being able to share this knowledge with fellow small businesses and to present valuable insights is an important part of Sunnyland’s culture.
Sunnyland is also home to the World’s Largest Patio Chair. We are often out in the community with the chair, whether it is supporting the local HOA parade, or loaning it to a non-profit group for the day for fun photo opportunities.
With its immense space, beautiful furniture and convenient location, Sunnyland’s showroom is utilized on a regular basis for community meetings, neighborhood watch meetings, fundraisers, interior design networking events, industry seminars, craft fairs and countless other activities to benefit the greater good of the community.
Saturdays and Sundays are high traffic days at Sunnyland. To help customers fight hungriness while shopping, Sunnyland offers customers free hot dogs and cold drinks. On all other days of the week, customers are offered complimentary drinks and snacks for children. An optional donation box is set up for customers to donate an amount of their choosing. Every quarter the donation box is emptied and donated to a different local charity.
Sunnyland has been honored with the state of Texas Governor’s Small Business Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. The award was presented by Governor Greg Abbott’s office for demonstrating a positive impact on society, contributing to the social or environmental well-being of the community.
At Sunnyland, there are 11 Rays of Sunshine representing its commitment to its customers, its team and its community. One of those commitments is to be a good corporate citizen in the local community.
There’s nothing small about Sunnyland; it sets big goals, it strives to significantly impact the community and it acquires only the greatest products and service for its customers.
